The special exhibition Strandbeest: The Dream Machines of Theo Jansen was at the Exploratorium May 27–September 5, 2016.This exhibition featured enormous kinetic sculptures called strandbeests—“beach animals” in Dutch—that mesmerized with their eerily lifelike motion. They have stomachs to store energy, allowing them to walk even when there’s no wind.
They have legs that take elegant strides. His creatures are designed to move -- and even survive -- on their own. Theo Jansen (1948, Scheveningen) published this reflection in 1990 in an article for the Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant. Two people got standing ovations for their presentations at GEL. They can even detect water and count their steps. He calls them Strandbeests and they are extraordinary. Since then, he has tirelessly dreamt up creatures capable of moving around on and surviving the beaches of the Netherlands: the Strandbeest, or Beach Animals. Artist Theo Jansen demonstrates the amazingly lifelike kinetic sculptures he builds from plastic tubes and lemonade bottles.

Since 1990, Jansen has been creating strandbeesten (Dutch for "beach animals", singular strandbeest), which are moving kinetic structures, sometimes wind-propelled, that resemble walking animals, described by Jansen as artificial life.All of his models are based on a system of triangles and connecting links which convert the rotation of an axle into a stepping motion of six or more legs.
